Picking Apart "Lies of the Line"

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

I've recently been approached with some questions regarding my new electro-rap "Lies of the Line." Here is a brief explanation of some of the main concepts:

Lies of the Line - Michael Eble (2022) Lies of the line Lies of the line I can't think straight so I'll think side to side I'll think in a bend, or a curve, or a rhyme I'll hide the truth that I'm trying to find In a verse, in a beat, in a moment of time I've got good eyes to see Just how blind I can be To the lies Of the line

This first part of the song describes a soul that is avoiding the truth in whatever form it may take, and is well aware that they are doing so. It also alludes to the simplicity of certain truths, and how one can hide such a truth in a puzzle or a poem or a song—when it was never meant to be concealed in that way. This section may be captioned "lies to self."

Lies of the line Lies of the line I can't speak straight, so I won't speak my mind I'll drag my true self through a mold I design I'll only say things that won't injure my pride And find ways to pull everyone under my stride I've got good lips to speak All the pain I will wreak With the lies Of the line

This second portion of the song dives into what might logically follow a "lie to self"; id est, a "lie to others." A soul that is not able to think straight will not be able to speak straight, and thus will not be able tell the truth to those around them. As a result, one such soul would be forced to fabricate a false identity; to drag their true selves through a mold they design. Usually succeeding this is the realization that being a faker on the top rung of society is better than being a faker at the bottom, and one such soul will proceed to pull everyone around them beneath them in a struggle to get to the top.

Lies of the line Lies of the line Lies of the line Don't hear Don't listen Don't look Don't give in Won't bow Won't buckle Give me strength For today And tomorrow Holds the evil that I speak And all those lies, the lie asleep And I hear His tender voice amidst the dark call out to me So if I ever heard a lie it's that my holy, loving Father up above He doesn't speak

This third and final section reflects a completely rotated worldview that brings a holy, loving Father into the picture. It is from these lines that the hear-no-evil-see-no-evil-speak-no-evil cover image is gleaned. In these final words lie the truth of the matter: these lies have not yet manifested themselves in this young soul's life. They must fight for the truth, and reject what is evil while there is still time. They must listen for the words of that holy, loving voice from up above. And they must recognize them as the only lines of truth they will ever hear while still on this earth.

It is for such a soul that I pray.
